South Africa tour of Australia
Twenty20 International Format
1st T20I
Australia v South Africa
Marrara Oval
Darwin, Australia
Sunday, 10 August 2025
Fresh from losing the tri-series final to New Zealand last month, South Africa head Down Under for the first
T20 International against Australia at the Marrara Oval on Sunday, August 10.
The Proteas failed to beat the Black Caps in all three of their matches, but came close to chasing the highest target set against them (180) in the decider in Harare before ultimately coming up three runs short.
Shukri Conrad's side don't have a great record against the Aussies in the shortened white-ball format, winning just eight of their 25 encounters.
Their last T20 victory came on 23 February 2020 in Gqeberha when Australia toured South Africa and won the series 2-1.
Aiden Markram returns to captain the team after being rested for the tri-series against Zimbabwe and New Zealand, although Marco Jansen and David Miller were not included in the squad.
Left-arm fast bowler Jansen is recovering from surgery to his left thumb, while left-handed batter Miller is featuring in the Hundred competition in the UK.
"It's great to have our senior players back in the mix after their rest following the WTC Final," Conrad said in a statement. "Their experience and quality add real value to the group as we continue to build a strong core in both formats.
"Every series from here on plays a part in shaping our squads for next year's T20 World Cup and the 50-over World Cup at home in 2027."
Austalia are back from a successful tour of the West Indies, whom they white-washed 5-0 in the T20s and 3-0 in the Test series.
Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood were both rested against the Windies, but have been recalled to the squad, while Matt Short has recovered from a side strain which ruled him out of the T20 series.
However, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc won't feature as they continue to be rested ahead of a busy home summer.
"As we build towards the T20 World Cup the flexibility and depth shown in the West Indies, outside of the obvious results, has been a huge positive," Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
"The flexibility within the batting order and ability of bowlers to bowl in different stages of the innings were particularly pleasing to see.
"The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of the squad for this Top End series, but all remain in the frame moving forward and we feel the entire group embraced every opportunity."
